Tile Effects

Tile Effects (Shortcut Key: 5)

You can add functions to tiles using the Tile Effects option. Choose which effect to apply by selecting a tile effect from the right-side panel.

Avatar Movement Effects (Impassable, Spawn)

You can place a tile that affects an avatar’s movement.
  • Impassable: This effect adds an effect to a time that will not allow avatars to go through it.
  • Spawn: This effect sets the location at which users will spawn upon entering the map.
When more than one spawn tile is placed, users will spawn at one of the spawn tiles randomly. If no spawn tile is placed, users will spawn in the center of the map.

Portal Effects (Portal, Map Location)

You can add an effect to a tile that will move an avatar from a Portal to a Map Location.
Portal
You can place a portal that allows movement to another area, map, or Space. Use the Map Editor to add a portal.
Select the Portal’s Destination (Space or map)
  • Move to another map within this Space: This moves users from their current map to another map within the same Space.
Map to move to must be selected to use this function. A target area can be designated to control where users will appear in the other map users will. If a target area is not designated, users will appear at the map’s spawn point.
  • Move to a designated area within the map: This moves users from the portal to a designated area within the same map. The Map Location function is used to designate areas.
  • Move to an outside Space: This moves users from the current Space to a different Space. The Space is designated by the Space ID.
Please input only the Space ID portion from the destination’s URL. The Space ID appears in the Space URL like so: https://zep.us/SpaceID. If the entire URL is entered instead of just the Space ID, the portal will not work.
  • Display name (optional): You can have a name appear above a portal to tell users where it will take them.
  • Trigger method
    • Press F: This option causes the portal to only trigger when a user presses F.
    • Move automatically: This option causes the portal to trigger when a user steps on the tile.
  • Hide portal object: When checked, the portal object image is hidden.
You can create a secret area and have a portal that connects to it or have an object with a password lock function to create a door that requires a password to open.
Map Location
The Map Location function is used to designate areas for use in ZEP script. It also allows you to designate areas for use with portals.
  • Area Name: This field gives a name to the designated area. (*Required)
The Area Name and the name given as a portal’s Target area’s name must match exactly. The same applies to writing ZEP script.
  • Width, Height: This field defines the size of the area. A minimum of 1 tile has to be set for each. (*Required)
  • Display name (optional): This field allows you to display a name above the designated area that can be seen by users. Map Location tile names will always be displayed on the tiles when in the Map Editor.

Audio/video Settings (Private Area, Spotlight)

Private Area

You can set an area for private conversations. With this function, you can recreate private seats, meeting rooms, cafe seats, etc.
Area ID
The area ID must be set. This allows areas with the same ID to function as a singular private area. Please note that tiles with the same area ID will be able to converse with each other and do not need to be adjacent to function.
  • Impassable private area: This sets the private area to be impassable. This can be differentiated by the red PA tiles. Refer to the screenshot below for a usage example.
    1. 1.
The tables are impassable, so users cannot go on top of the table. However, the non-private areas have a gray shadow layer applied, so the table will go dark if set like the example.
    2. 2.
The table has been set as a general private area. There are no issues with the table going dark, but users go on top of the table.
    3. 3.
The impassable private area function allows you to create a table that cannot be walked on top of and not be affected by the non-private area shadow layer.
  • Limited capacity private area: This limits the tile capacity to allow only 1 person per tile.

Spotlight

You can set a specific area or tile to broadcast any user’s video, audio, and chat messages when they are on that tile or in that area. No additional settings need to be configured for placing this tile effect.
If there are too many spotlight tiles, and too many users end up stepping on those tiles, it may cause some lag within the Space. We recommend using less than 30 spotlight tiles.
You can add media and sound effects to tiles.
YouTube
Web Links
Ambient Sound
You can embed a YouTube video in the map.
  • YouTube Link to Embed: This field is for the URL you want to embed. (*Required)

  • Play Method
    • Press Play to start the video: This option requires users to press play for the video to start.

  • Hide portal object: When checked, the portal object image is hidden.
Placing a link or opening a pop-up may not be possible for the following situations:
  • If the URL link is a http address
  • If the original site blocks web embeds
You can embed a sound file in a selected tile.
  • Sound File: Select an MP3 file to upload. (*Required)
  • Active Distance: This option allows you to define the radius in which the tile can be heard. If the active distance is set to 0, the sound can be heard only when on the tile. (*Required)

    • Repeat: This option causes the sound file to play repeatedly.
